Acoustic treatment of а concert venue, Switzerland

Project Overview
MONDAYS AT SEVEN is an intimate and engaging art series located in Biel, Switzerland, which includes live music, literary theater, and dance performances. These events happen on the first Monday of each month and allow attendees connect closer with the performers. In order to keep the space's emotional and acoustic connection, DECIBEL was appointed to provide professional acoustic treatment that would improve the experience for both artists and audience members.
Regulating sound reflections, flutter echoes, and reverberation is critical in any live performance environment. Proper acoustic treatment makes sure that every note and spoken word are clear, evenly distributed, and distortion-free, regardless of where the audience is sitting. Without this, the venue's goal, to creating a meaningful connection between art and the listener, may be lost.
Challenge
The venue's acoustic setting suffered from uneven sound distribution, high reverberation, flutter echoes, and an insufficient amount of suitable listening spots. These difficulties made it difficult for performers to communicate properly, resulting in an inconsistent experience for those in the audience.
The end goal was to address these acoustic issues in a practical and affordable way, while keeping the space's simple, intimate style. DECIBEL was given the task with developing a design that would reduce and eliminate disruptive reflections, flatten the reverb curve, and increase the "sweet spot" for audience members, all while maintaining the venue's aesthetic charm.
Scope of Work
- Installation of sound diffusers for high-frequency scattering
- Strategic placement of acoustic treatment for reverberation control
- Full acoustic assessment and consultation
- Collaboration with local acoustic specialist for on-site measurements
Solution
DECIBEL installed a selection of acoustic diffusers to target high-frequency reflections and eliminate flutter echo. These diffusion panels were placed on key wall and ceiling surfaces to scatter sound energy evenly throughout the space. The three-dimensional geometry of the diffusers provided horizontal and vertical dispersion, which helped remove reflections and smoothed the room’s overall acoustics.
The change increased the number of high-quality listening spots in the theater, making sure that audience members, no matter where they were seated can enjoy a balanced, immersive sound experience. The acoustic treatment additionally improved performer feedback, helping musicians and speakers to hear each other better and perform with more confidence.
Result
Following installation, the acoustic environment was transformed. The sound became clear, transparent, and evenly distributed across the entire seating area. Specular reflections were removed, reverberation was brought under control, and performers could interact more naturally thanks to enhanced auditory feedback.
With approximately 50 seats, there were no longer “bad seats” in the house, only clarity and presence. The result is a venue where both artists and audiences can engage deeper, allowing the art to resonate in every sense of the word.
