Acoustic Treatment of Premium Apartments in Sofia
Project Overview
DECIBEL was contacted to provide a full acoustic solution for R&R Apartments, a premium serviced apartment building located on Chataldja Street in the center of Sofia. The building, originally constructed in 1980, was fully renovated in 2020 by a private investor aiming to offer boutique hospitality with a rare advantage: high-level acoustic comfort and privacy.
The client wanted to ensure both strong sound insulation between apartments and pleasant interior acoustics inside each unit. The goal was to create an environment where guests could relax, work, and sleep without being disturbed by neighbours or outside noise.
Why Acoustic Treatment Matters
In big cities, noise pollution affects health, sleep, and focus. In Sofia, recent reports show that over 60% of the city is exposed to high noise levels, between 58 and 77 dBA during the day. Even moderate levels around 50-60 dBA can disturb rest and irritate the nervous system.
In hotels and rental apartments, acoustic comfort is often overlooked. Yet, guests increasingly expect quiet surroundings and full privacy. For R&R Apartments, offering true silence and isolation became a key part of the premium experience.
Challenge
The goal was clear: complete sound insulation between apartments. Guests should be able to watch TV, play music, or talk loudly without anyone in the next room hearing them. At the same time, the client wanted to avoid echo or discomfort inside the rooms. The design needed to combine technical efficiency and a sense of calm and coziness.
All materials had to match the visual style of the interiors while delivering high acoustic performance. The final setup needed to meet high expectations and support the building’s premium positioning.
Scope of Work
- Designing and installing sound insulation systems between apartments
- Selecting and placement of acoustic wall panels in each room
- Using products that increase both function and visual style
- Final testing and acoustic measurements to confirm results
Solution
To meet the project goals, DECIBEL used a combination of soundproofing and acoustic treatment solutions.
For interior acoustic comfort, the following products were installed:
- GLL 3D™ fabric acoustic panels: Triangular wall-mounted panels placed behind beds and TVs to absorb reflected sound and reduce echo.
- ECHO MOON ceiling baffles: Suspended panels that absorb sound from both sides and support quiet and focused space acoustics.
- ECHO PRINT acoustic panels with custom artwork: Installed to match the design of the room’s visual identity while providing high sound absorption.
These products were added after all structural insulation systems had been installed. Together, they helped create a quiet, private, and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for each apartment.
Result
To measure the final result, DECIBEL simulated a real-world test. A TV was turned up to 80 dBA in one apartment. In the neighbouring room, the sound level measured only 25 dBA, well below the 35 dBA threshold recommended for restful sleep.
Even by ear, no noise could be detected from the next room. The combination of sound insulation and acoustic panels exceeded expectations. As a result, R&R Apartments now offers a unique level of silence and privacy rarely found in rental properties.
