- Industrial Noise Reduction for Smurfit Westrock Factory
Industrial Noise Reduction for Smurfit Westrock Factory

Project Overview
An Irish manufacturer of corrugated and paper-based packaging, Smurfit Westrock PLC, contacted DECIBEL with a request to solve noise problems exceeding local regulation limits at the factory border. The continuous operation of production equipment and utility systems created disturbance for the surrounding area, requiring a long-term noise control solution that would comply with environmental standards.
Reducing Industrial Noise at the Factory Perimeter
The factory operates day and night, and noise from ventilation units, water pumps, and other support systems can accumulate and travel beyond the site boundaries. The goal of the project was to identify all significant noise sources and reduce their combined impact without affecting factory operations.
Challenge
The main challenge was to locate and separate multiple simultaneous noise sources operating across the site. Each system contributed differently to the overall sound level, making it necessary to perform detailed on-site measurements to pinpoint dominant frequencies and critical emission points. The solution also had to ensure resistance to humidity and meet the plant’s maintenance requirements.
Scope of Work
- Full site inspection and acoustic measurements to map all major noise sources
- Acoustic assessment of ventilation units, water pump room, and auxiliary systems
- Design and installation of silencers on three key points of the ventilation system
- Installation of moisture-resistant sound-absorbing materials in the water pump room
- Replacement of the existing door with a movable louvre door for both airflow and acoustic attenuation
- Post-installation measurements to verify compliance with the regulatory limits
Solution
DECIBEL’s engineering team developed a combined noise control system targeting all critical areas. Three silencers were installed at selected ventilation points to minimise air-borne noise. The water pump room was treated with absorption panels designed for humid environments, preventing sound reflections while maintaining durability. In addition, a custom movable louvre door was installed to replace the old unit, improving both sound insulation and access functionality.
All systems were engineered to preserve airflow and mechanical efficiency, while significantly lowering sound pressure levels at the factory perimeter.
Result
After installation, DECIBEL conducted verification measurements that confirmed a significant noise reduction at the source. The solution brought noise levels below the regulatory threshold, ensuring compliance and improving environmental conditions around the site. The client was satisfied with both the acoustic performance and the minimal impact on daily operations.
